TELEMARK SKI ONTARIO 2012-2013 EVENTS

As the saying goes, “we’re off to the races”. TSO’s main event starts February 9th at Mansfield Ski Club. Our first race will be a Giant Slalom. There will be a clinic in the morning followed by the race in the afternoon.
TSO is also having a team category again this year, this proved to be a very positive feature at our events during last year, and it gives us more time on course. Teams are made up of two men and either a woman or a junior. Get your team together and come up with a funky name.
Cost for each event is $85.00, inclusive of lift ticket, and $55.00 for private club members using an exchange ticket. The early bird rate is $245.00 for the series and $215.00 for private club members. A $20.00 memberships is required. Fees for entering a team is $15.00 per member of the team for the series.HELMETS ARE MANDATORY
Registration at all events is 8:00 AM- 9:30 AM at the respective resorts.

The Eastern Canadian Telemark Cup is being hosted by Calabogie Peaks Resort and Telemark Ski Ontario, February 23rd and 24th. The weekend unfolds on Saturday morning with clinics on skating technique, jumping, and skiing around gates. Saturday afternoon is free skiing as well as an Apres Ski in the Black Donald pub featuring live R&B music. Sunday morning brings the weeken…d’s highlight, the modified Sprint Classic Race, followed by more free skiing. Later Sunday afternoon is the finale with the awards. There are categories for youth, adult, and master racers, for both competitive and novice skiers.
This weekend is primarily intended to foster free-heel camaraderie. Many free-heelers ski in relative isolation and this event is TSO’s first attempt to bring you together in one spot for a rockin’, fun, free-heelin’ time. Cost for each day is $70.00 (inclusive of lift ticket) or $130.00 for the weekend (inclusive of lift ticket)

Last Saturday and Sunday TSO hosted the Annual Ski Camp that was attended by 15 participants. Coach Mark put the rain braving soles through a variety of exercises to improve our ski technique, and at times challenged some of us quite a bit with what he asked us to do. Once we finished working on ski technique we wer then challenged by utilizing these skills to run a short course of brushes. Many of the participants saw their overall ski technique improve over the span of the one or two days. Brian Backland was in attendance on Saturday to video the participants so we could see what Mark was trying to get across to us throughout the day. The video also allowed us to see the progress of each of the participants.
A very big thank-you goes out to Jim morris, director of MSLM ski school, as well as the entire Huter family for working so hard to get as much terrain open as they were able to.
Enjoy any time you may have off over the holidays with family, friends, and hopefully you’ll be able to ski.

Join Telemark Ski Ontario as they host the first Eastern Canadian Telemark Cup at Calabogie Peaks Resort. Skiers from across Ontario, Quebec, and Upstate New York will converge on Calabogie Peaks Resort for a weekend of Free-Heel skiing fun and activities, which will be highlighted by Telemark Giant Slalom race on Sunday morning.
Festivities begin on Saturday morning with free-heel ski skills clinics followed by gate training, all under the coaching of Telemark Quebec’s Stephane Perrault. Saturday afternoon will focus on Free-Heel free-skiing and highlighting what can be accomplished by Free-Heel skiers. Apres Ski is in Black Donald’s Pub where there will be live music and telemark films on the screens.
After a well deserved sleep, Sunday’s highlight is the Telemark Giant Slalom race featuring a jump (or a detour gate for those less inclined racers). Sunday afternoon will again focus on free-skiing and awards starting at 3:00 PM.
Plan to join us for a rocking weekend of friendship building, ski development, and racing. The racing activities are specifically designed to be inclusive of all ages and abilities.

FINAL TSO RACE CANCELLED, REPLACED WITH AWESOME IRISH SPRING FLING

It was with great disappointment that TSO had to advise members last Friday, March 16th, that the race had to be scrubbed due to an unsafe race environment. 16 diehards came out to ski in what some would call, summer conditions, to work with Rob Henderson to share important personal learning points/highlights of the season with each other, it was a wonderful cooperative experience. The day started with a tour of the now infamous mudslide that nearly swallowed four homes in Craigleith at the end of last week. Some members even braved the very granular snow by wearing shorts and short sleeves and had skinned knees and elbows to show. Final race standing awards were presented afterwards. Special Thanks to Stephen Corner “Steve the Potter” for his unique design of the overall winner awards. Thanks also goes to our series sponsors; Mountain Equipment Coop, Rossignol, Ski Telemark, Sojourn, The Weathervane, White Squall. Thank-you also to the resorts for there support; Mount St. Louis Moonstone, Caledon Ski Club, Mansfield Ski Club, and Alpine Ski Club. A very special thank-you is extended to the fabulous volunteers who were gate judges and chief of judges.
In all, it was a great way to closeout a difficult season. Let’s hope some snow can survive the heat so we can get at least another day in.

FINAL TSO SLALOM RACE at ALPINE SKI CLUB

Don’t forget to come out and support the fastest action on bent knees. TSO is hosting its final race of the season, Saturday, March 17th, at Alpine Ski Club. Registration is 8:00 AM until 9:30 AM, Course inspection at 9:30 AM. This race will decide the overall winners of each classification, including the new team class. TSO Giant Slalom Race Report from Mansfield Ski Club

Telemark Ski Ontario members were blessed with a beautifully cold morning that motivated them to keep moving to stay warm. The morning was spent with Rob, developing a wider stance and quicker turn initiation in a variety of terrain at a variety of speeds.
After lunch, TSO members got to showcase their talents on Devil’s Stairway. Gord Manual and his race crew set a very rythmic course, THANKS! The racers were very impressive with the consistency of runs they put togehter, sometimes less than 1/2 a second difference between runs.

TSO Giant Slalom Race Report from Caledon Ski Club

Telemark Ski Ontario’s 1st race of the year was a tremendous success. Racers awoke to a fresh blanket of snow, some members had to travel in near white out conditions. Upon arriving at Caledon Ski Club, racers were welcomed with clear skies and beautiful conditions. Ullr smiled kindly upon us. The race was held on Knight Flight. Many of the racers could be overheard discussing the excitement of adrenaline pumping through the body as they anticipated the starter calmly stating, “skier ready! 3-2-1…”. All racers rose to the challenge of the course.
The afternoon featured a great clinic with Mark “The Coach” Kinoshita. Members spent time practicing starting, jumping and landing in the Telemark position, and finally angulating and holding a carving position. The event filled day ended with individual and team awards, and swag from our generous sponsors.

Skills Camp was a definite success. There was a good turn out at MSLM, even if the ground was still green/brown in the city. MSLM staff worked wonders and the conditions were great. Thank-you to the Huter Family and Jim Morris of the MSLM ski school for making the camp possible for a second year in a row. I know the camp, led by TSO coach, Mark Kinoshita, was successful by the comments made by the partarticipants. Their legs were sore and wobbly. It was a most excellent way to get into ski shape for the season. Mark definitely kept us on our toes, literally!

Where in the World is UllR?

If you are unaware, Ski Telemark has had to postpone their 27th Annual Warm-up Day at Mount St. Louis Moonstone as there is not much in the way of snow on the ground. It will be held on December 17th.
Telemark Ski Ontario will continue to hold it’s 2nd Annual Skills Camp on December 17th and 18th. This means some of us will have a decision to make on the 17th, which can be seen as a good thing as there will be a lot of free-heel action going on. The TSO Camp features TSO coach, former National Telemark Ski Team member, and CANSI level II instructor, Mark Kinoshita, as well as five time INTER-SKI Canada member and CANSI level III instructor, Rob Henderson. I encourage you to come out and start your ski season off with a great opportunity. Welcome Back Fellow Free-Heelers

Are you ready for a new season of activity? Ski Telemark, Sojourn, and Telemark Ski Ontario started the season off with the annual “Free-Heel Gear-up”, night on Novevmber 10th, in Barrie at Sojourn. There were representatives from Black Diamond, Rossignol, Scarpa, and Brian Backland Photography. They brought along boots and skis for participants to try on. This was an extremely busy and informative evening and was a great way to build pre-season anticipation and excitement. Photos to follow shortly.

On Saturday November 12th, MEC hosted their first Snow-Fest. This event was also a great success. David Kilbourn and Keith Woods represented Ski Telemark and Telemark Ski Ontario. They were very busy all day long, promoting our graceful sport. There were many clubs and organizations in attendance to answer questions, or to just meet people and talk about what we all share in common, “Wintery, Outdoor Fun”. If you were not able to attend, don’t despair, you can still visit the Burlington MEC store, Saturday, November 19th. For those of you north of the city, you can visit the Barrie MEC store, November 26th. Times for these events are 9:00 AM until 5:00PM

Telemark Ski Ontario Represented at Telemark Quebec’s Final Race

Three hearty souls travelled to the Mont Tremblant Region of Quebec’s Laurentians to represent Ontario at Telemark Quebec’s final event. The race was held on Mont Blanc’s “Guy McCann” run, same as last year. The race featured a awesome jump that was not very high but really taxed the racer’s ability to jump a long way down the hill. The course was very fast, as the winning time for the fastest skier of the day was a penalty free 31.16 seconds. Telemark Quebec was very happy to see Ontario racers return, this is starting to create some very positive momentum between the provinces. There are tentative plans for events between Ontario and Quebec next year. Let’s cross our fingers and hope the stars align so it can happen.

NEWS FLASH
Visit theTelerium website to see the newest telemark binding sensation that is getting everyone who see’s it very excited. It is a step-in releaseable binding that works with duck-billed telemark boots. The bindings are developed and produced by TSO’s own Horst Mueller and Wolfgang Bleckert. The Telerium binding should be available in the fall of this year.

THE ALPINE RACE REPORT

The season ended on a superbly set race course held at Alpine Ski Resort. We had some new racers join in the fun, as well as some friends we have not seen out this season.
Mark Kinoshita says he, “had some input into the course setting”, and I believe him, as some of the gates truly tested our abilities to make very tight turns at high velocities. Some of the situations that I saw on the course reminded me of “The Wide World of Sports” saying of “the thrills and spills of competition” as there appeared to be a few of the latter. Especially one large racer who mowed down a gate. The race crew at Alpine were quite impressed with the speeds with which we skied yesterday, some of the words were, “that you usually see Telemark skiers skiing slowly and gracefully, I never thought you could ski that fast on telemark skis.”
It was great to see everyone come out and support the last event of our season.
Don’t forget that Telemark Quebec is having their final race this Sunday at Mont Blanc. There are a few of us travelling on Friday, if you wish to carpool please contact us by replying to this email and we can forward your email to the drivers.

The Mansfield Race Report, February 12th.

It must be something we did right, as it was another snowy drive to the race. Everytime we race we have to scrape the powder to the side of the hill. The race saw participants cruising down a beautiful course. The entire race course was visible top to bottom from the starting hut. It was really great to watch the race from the bottom. The course was long enough to have two racers on at time. Following the race TSO members got to try the Rottefella NTN telemark binding system, and ripped the hill in general. It is so nice to ski with a number of Free-Heelers. Awards followed the day’s activity on the slopes.
Special thanks go out to Gord Manuel, Fay Smith and their crew at Mansfield Ski Club for hosting us and setting a great course, I would like to also thank the intrepid group of gate judges who show up to races and stand in the cold, to keep the racers honest to the Telemark Style. The Caledon Race Report, January 15th.

Wow! We must have been close to Acton, as it was well worth the drive to the ski hill today. Thanks goes out to all the brave souls who travelled the highways and bi-ways to get to the race. We had a bit of a delay due to the weather, and were well rewarded with great conditions. The race course had to be slipped numerous times during inspection just to remove the POW! The race was very exciting and some of the gates definitely tested our skill. The race was followed by gate training, with assistance from Caledon Alpine Director Bill Yeigh. During the afternoon TSO members had the chance to roam the park and skier cross course to add some cross-training and test their mettle. Awards Ceremony and Schwag closed the day’s events.

Performance Skiing/Racing Camp update:

This past weekend TSO had the pleasure of having Stephane Perreault of Telemark Quebec and Mark Kinoshita of TSO and Ski Telemark spend the weekend helping increase the ski performance skills of TSO members. By the comments and the facial expressions of the participants each day, it was a worthwhile experience. The skill development of each participant was very noticable by the end of each day, most noticeably was the development of a core group of 7 individuals who took part in the entire weekend and it was inspiring to see how their skiing was elevated to a new level. Some of the concepts that participants were instructed in were; developing a more balanced stance, carving, projecting motion/force through the turn, and starting a race more powerfully. Most of the weekend was centered around developing a more powerful,effecient, and fluid skier. In the future I hope to see more of you choosing to come and develop your ski technique.

Tele Style @ Soujourn, December 2, 2010

It was great to see familiar faces come out to support Sojourn’s Tele Style evening. Then evening started of with a fantastic spread of delicious snacks and wine provided by the wonderful folks at sojourn; followed by a warm welcome by Bob Picken of Sojourn; and Holly Blefgen of Ski Telemark.
The main feature was a presentation by Bryan Spiegel about his experience with telemark skiing and in particular his experiences with Rottefella’s NTN binding system.
TSO was present to support our sponsors and to provide motivational videos of Free-Heel skiing, just to add to the anticipation and excitement for the upcoming season.
